Rosie stirs a pot of soup

“The cutest thing of all is when we finish making her bed in the morning,” added my aunt.

“Cute?” said my father. “Making a bed is cute?”

“She finishes by swinging her frilly pillow on the bed with a little lilt. Whee!” With the word “lilt,” Sister Paulus swung her hips and one hand. I imagined a drumbeat accompaniment. We laughed and so did Rosie. She understood my aunt’s humor!

Rosie makes her bed

When she didn’t like someone or if she didn’t get her way, Rosie could misbehave like a stubborn child. She wasn’t fond of one of her caretakers and called her “the chauffeur” or “the maid.” If that nun turned the television on so she could watch a program, Rosie stood in front of the set, blocking the view. She’d say, “Don’t like that maid.”

Once, when my uncle, Father Paul, brought another priest to visit Rosie and Sister Paulus, the two men sat down at the dining table for lunch. Unfortunately, the other priest took a seat at the head of the table, in Rosie’s usual chair.

“Don’t like that man in black,” she said throughout the meal. Rosemary did like her routines. She knew her place in her own home.
